SHINee & BEAST’s leaders become friends
Three songs that I’ve been listening to a lot lately all seem to come from the same family tree: MBLAQ’s "낙서" (Scribble), Beast’s "이럴 줄 알았어" (I Knew It), and Block B’s "싱크로율 100%" (Synchronization 100%). They’re all guitar-picking ballads that mix rapping with tender vocals, but each gets a stylistic twist, as if the same song really was given to all the groups and they were told to make it their own. So MBLAQ’s inherits the accordion figures from "Mona Lisa" and the hushed sadness of "Cry", Beast’s gets the Shinsadong Tiger funk-bass treatment, and Block B’s integrates elements of reggae (well, Sublime, anyway), as well as a major key (they only use the minor key when they’re getting tough). The lyrics even progress chronologically through a crappy relationship: “Synchronization 100%” refers to being reminded of a girl that you once knew; Beast’s is about catching your girlfriend with another guy; and MBLAQ’s deals with the heartache after a breakup.
Beast’s is the only one that was released as a single (“Scribble” was promoted, but not as the title song), so it’s possible that there’s a whole bunch of these man-tears guitar ballads lurking towards the ends of albums and it’s a standard thing. But this is the first time I’ve noticed so many cropping up at the same time, and sounding so similar (but not in a bad way - they each have something individual to offer, even if I sometimes hear “I Knew It” when I’m thinking about “Scribble”).
